Deck and Fence Work in Bend, Oregon

Bend is hard on wood. The city sits at about 3,600 feet, so summer sun hits harder than it does down in the valley, and the air is dry enough to pull the moisture out of a deck in a single season. Then winter brings snow that sits on the boards for weeks, and nights that freeze long after the afternoons warm up. Every neighborhood feels it a little differently. The older homes around Drake Park and the river often have decks and fences that have been patched for decades. Newer builds in Northwest Crossing come with tight lots and HOA rules about color and style. Up on Awbrey Butte, decks hang off steep slopes and catch the full force of the wind. And on the east side, where many fences went up in the same building boom, whole streets now have fences reaching the same tired age at once.

We build, stain, and repair decks and fences all over town, from the west side out past the east side neighborhoods. Most of our Bend calls are for deck staining or fence repair after a windstorm, but we handle new builds too. Call or send the form, and we'll come take a look. Quotes are free and in writing, and we'll tell you honestly whether you need a repair, a refresh, or something new. If you've got both a deck and a fence that need attention, we can price them together.

Fence Height Rules in Bend

Before we build a fence anywhere inside city limits, we check it against Bend's development code. In residential areas, a fence in the front setback can be up to 3.5 feet tall, and fences along side and rear setbacks can go up to 6 feet. Outside the setbacks the limit is 8 feet, but anything over 7 feet needs a building permit. That's why most backyard privacy fences in Bend land right at 6 feet. Corner lots get extra attention, since the city also limits what can block sight lines near intersections. On top of the city rules, many Bend subdivisions have HOA guidelines that cover materials, stain colors, and even which side of the fence faces the street. We read through those before we quote, so you don't end up with a fence the HOA asks you to change. If you're out past city limits, in places like Tumalo, county rules apply instead, and we'll check those too. Once the layout is settled, we call in a utility locate before any digging starts.

Decks With a View

A lot of Bend decks are built for one thing: the view. Facing west toward Mount Bachelor and the Three Sisters means facing the hottest afternoon sun, and that's exactly the side of the house where stain wears out first. On the west side and on the buttes, many decks are raised well off the ground on sloped lots, which means taller posts, deeper footings, and guardrails that have to meet code. Those decks need a permit, and they need a frame built to carry snow as well as people. When we look at an older raised deck in Bend, we spend as much time underneath it as on top, checking the ledger, the posts, and the hardware. If you're planning something new, our deck building page walks through materials and the permit process. If you're happy with the deck you have, a fresh coat of stain every couple of years will keep it that way. We can match the color you have now or help you pick something new.
