Deck and Fence Work in Redmond, Oregon

Redmond is drier and windier than Bend, and you can see it in the fences. Out here the landscape opens up into juniper and sagebrush, and there's less to slow the wind as it moves across town. Privacy fences catch it like a sail, and the posts on the windward side are usually the first to lean. The dry air works on wood year-round, and the sun is just as strong as it is twenty minutes south. Redmond has also grown fast over the last couple of decades, which means a lot of newer homes whose builder-grade fences and decks are now hitting the age where boards split and posts start to rot at the ground. Add in the dust that blows through on dry days, and fences and decks here take a steady beating.

We build, stain, and repair decks and fences across Redmond, from neighborhoods along the Dry Canyon to newer subdivisions on the edges of town. Most Redmond calls are for new fence installation or deck repair on homes that are ten to twenty years old. Call or send the form for a free on-site quote. We'll look at the whole deck or fence, not just the part that's bothering you, and give you a written price with the must-do work listed first.

Building Fences for Redmond Wind

Wind is the main thing we design around in Redmond. A 6-foot solid privacy fence takes a lot of sideways force in a big gust, and every one of those gusts rocks the posts a little in the ground. Over a few winters, with freeze and thaw loosening the soil, that's how a whole run ends up leaning the same direction. We set posts deeper and in concrete, use heavier posts at gates and corners, and pay attention to which way the fence faces the prevailing wind. On long runs, a board-on-board design or a small gap between boards lets some air through without giving up much privacy. Metal fences and open designs handle wind better still, which is one reason they're popular in front yards. Further north, in places like Terrebonne, acreage properties face the same wind with even less shelter, so we use many of the same techniques there. A fence built for the wind costs a little more up front and a lot less over its life.

Staining Decks and Fences in Redmond

With less rain and more open sun than Bend, Redmond decks and fences dry out fast. Bare wood here can go from new to gray in a couple of summers, and boards that dry too quickly start to check and split along the grain. A penetrating stain slows that down by putting UV protection and water resistance back into the surface. On newer Redmond homes, we often find fences and decks that were never stained at all after they were built. If the wood is still sound, a good clean and a coat of semi-transparent stain can bring it back and add years to its life. If it's too far gone, we'll replace the worst boards first. Our fence staining and painting page explains how we prep and how often the stain will need refreshing. Doing the deck and fence in one visit saves time and usually some money. We'll match the stain color to your house or HOA guidelines.
